A story of awareness and inclusion about a little girl with a big heart and the self-confidence to inspire others
Millie Doesn’t Mind is inspired by author Traci Carroll’s own childhood as a daughter of West Indians who came to England in the 60s, her parents loved and supported her. Traci grew up in a new culture, and it was a little difficult at times, but she never let anyone get her down.
My art reflects my life
Millie Doesn’t Mind is a picture book for young children that is great for reading at school or home. A wonderful place to start discussions about communities, friendship and ‘fitting-in’.
The name Millie comes from Millie Small, the Jamaican singer and songwriter whose hit ‘My Boy Lollipop’ was a favourite of Traci and her mother. It was one of the first ever ska-style UK chart hits and represents Jamaican culture finding its place British society. Millie died around the time Traci wrote this book
